Scooters are a type of small personal motorized vehicle that feature a step-through-design. This step-through-design refers to the riding configuration of having both feet planted on the floor of the scooter, much like sitting in a chair, which distinguishes the scooter from the motorcycle which employs foot pegs mounted to the frame. Though the design of the scooter itself is quite distinctive, many scooters with larger engines are often classified as motorcycles. Conversely, some smaller engine motorcycles can be legally classified as scooters despite their design. And lastly, some scooters and motorcycles don’t easily conform to one class or the other and are often distinguished solely by the local regulatory laws. All this can seem quite confusing, but the important thing to remember is that your local transportation authority will ultimately classify your vehicle based upon their laws and regulations.

Scooters were one of the first automated vehicles to gain popularity even as early as the late 19th Century. Part of the reason for their popularity was that they were cheaper than cars and much more maneuverable. Scooters were used in both World Wars adding to their popularity as servicemen had found them so useful in performing their daily duties. But it was not until after WWII that the scooter really took off in popularity. In Italy and much of Asia the scooter was a rather unusual innovation that had been more or less introduced by allied forces. Unlike cars and even motorcycles, scooters were uniquely suited to the cramped narrow crowded streets of Italy and Asia.

Decommissioned aircraft factories had nothing to build but possessed an extensive infrastructure and parts left over from aircraft manufacture. To stay afloat, and to fulfill a genuine economic need, these factories began pumping out scooters from surplus parts. In Italy, the president of Piaggio, a former aircraft manufacturer, was said to have remarked ‘Sembra una vespa.’ when first showed their prototype scooter. In English, the phrase translates to ‘It looks like a wasp.’ Hence Vespa, or wasp, is a term that has come to refer to scooters worldwide, regardless of their point of origin.

Since the Second World War, scooters have become increasingly popular. 50cc engines remain popular, but larger, faster engines are becoming increasingly common. Even electric scooter engines have become more popular as they have become more powerful and reliable. Scooter parts are easy to find anywhere in the world and most mechanical work is much easier and cheaper to perform than on a car. For these reasons, alongside many others, the scooter is here to stay.
